Namibian Nomad - Adventure Trip
2 weeks: Windhoek to Cape Town (OVC-NN)
Departing Windhoek, the capital of Namibia we are greeted by a vastness of scenery which is awe inspiring. Namibia, with contrasting landscapes and diversity in population is both fascinating and exciting. The beautiful Etosha National Park gives us the opportunity to see an astonishing variety of African wildlife such as elephant, giraffe, lion and cheetah. After Etosha we continue through Bushman land to Twyfelfontein viewing rock paintings produced some five thousand years ago by San Bushmen. We then journey along the Skeleton Coast, named due its emptiness and eerie mists that cover the sand dunes creating a mystical atmosphere. Namibia is 75% desert and no visit would be complete without time spent at Sessriem exploring the largest sand dunes in the world. Our time in Namibia concludes with a visit to the Fish River Canyon where on the canyon rim the views at sunset are spectacular. We travel on across the Tropic of Capricorn into South Africa. Before reaching Cape Town we journey through Namaqualand, a region barren and desolate except for part of the year when the area explodes in bloom. Stellenbosch, surrounded by mountains and vineyards, is in the heart of winemaking country where we will enjoy a wine tour. This memorable journey reaches its final destination Cape Town, where we leave you to conquer Table Mountain.
Itineraries
Day 1We depart Windhoek immediately on Day 1 at 9am. Heading north to the Etosha National Park for 2 days of game viewing such as Lion, Elephant, Giraffe, Rhino, Cheetah, Hyena, etc
Day 2 to 3Days 2 and 3 in Etosha National Park will be spent on safari; completing early morning and sunset game drives to give us a better chance of viewing the wildlife. The mid afternoons and the late evenings will be spent at the animal water holes close to the campsites. As well as viewing the game, there is also plenty of time for relaxing by the campsite pool with a cool refreshment.
Day 4 to 5After Etosha we drive to Otjitotongwe Cheetah Park. The Cheetah Park has become well known in Namibia for its conservancy programme in helping Cheetahs that would have otherwise been shot as trophies on farms and ranches in Nambia. The programme is now helping tourists understand Cheetah and the park itself allows us to get up close and sometimes personal with Cheetah expecially at feeding times. We spend a night and day at the Park with time to view the Cheetah relax and take in the envirmoment.
Day 6Our next destination is Swakopmund on the Skeleton Coast. We cross barren mountainous landscape en route to the Skeleton Coast. The rock outcrops of the region are decorated with rock engravings etched some 6000-years ago by early San hunters. It is one of the richest collections of rock art on the African Continent. Before reaching Swakopmund we may choose to free camp in this harsh, bleak wilderness known as one of the world''s most inhospitable regions. This land has a somewhat mysterious air, perhaps due to the fogs that hang over the shore along sections of the coast. The Skeleton Coast was given its name by early mariners who fell fall of the treacherous coastline it was known also as “the sands of hell”. Camping one night in this ghostly region is an expereince.
We arrive at the town of Swakopmund and overnight at one of the Lodges, which is a break from the camping. In Swakopmund; bordered on three sides by the desert and the fourth side by the Atlantic Ocean, the climate is varied; warm during the day and cool in the evenings with periods of sunshine and fog. As well as its unique climate Swakopmund is unique for its distinct colonial and baroque architecture. The 2 days we are in town there are a great many bars cafes and shops to explore, however for the more adventurous activities include “sand boarding” and quad biking in the dune fields that encroach onto the town.
Day 9Moving inland away from the coast we cross the tropic of Capricorn in the Namib-Naukluft Park, one of the worlds largest, oldest and driest desert national parks. The Namib is famous for its sea of sand comprising some of the worlds largest sand dunes. At the heart of the Namib is the remote Sessriem camp, it is here that we will base ourselves for a night, The camp is pleasant and the site is dotted with Camel-thorn acacia tree’s some as old as a 1000 years, the camp is also complete with swimming pool and good amenities-a welcome respite during the heat of the day. Forty-Five kilometres from the camp is aptly named Dune 45, a stunning apricot red dune, which is one of the largest in the park. In the early hours of the morning we can take a short excursion to Dune 45, to meet sunrise at the summit the view from the summit is un-interrupted and the sunrise spectacular.
Day 10Continuing still further south, we move on to Fish River Canyon. This spectacular land formation measures 160km in length up to 27km in width, and reaches a depth of 550m. It compares to the Grand Canyon and the Colca Canyon. Formed by the erosion of Fish River. From our camp at Hobas we can enjoy spectacular views along the canyon rim, in fact this evening we enjoy a BBQ at the very edge of the Canyon as the sun is setting....
From the Orange River, we continue south and enter the Republic of South Africa. We head to Stellenbosch at the heart of the grape-growing region, the right place to pick up some wine, for our end of tour dinner.
Day 11From Fish River we Overland to another river; The Orange River. We camp at Felix Unite Camp on the banks of the Orange River where in the afternoon we can take a dug out canoe for a sunset cruise. The evening we relax in the campsite Bar no doubt sharing our exepriences of our days in Namibia.
Day 14Winding our way south again, we arrive at our final destination-the stunning and cosmopolitan Cape Town, marking the end of an epic and fun safari. Cape Town is probably one of the most visually arresting cities in the world. We recommend a few days in Cape Town before moving on as you may wish to take a ride in the cable car up to the summit of the 1000m high Table Mountain, or enjoy the waterfront shops and/or go for a bracing dip in both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans! Our arrival at the SunFlower Stop Backpackers in Cape Town marks the end of our journey....
