Austria - Alpine Activity Week - Family adventure Trip

1 week: UK to The Styrian Alps (AAAW)

The Salzkammergut is an area of outstanding natural beauty characterised by crystal clear lakes and towering mountains. Our activities take place in the Dachstein-Tauern region known locally as the “Valley of a Thousand Springs”. The abundance of mountains, rivers and lakes make this the perfect location for canyoning, rafting, kayaking and climbing amidst some of the most beautiful countryside anywhere in Europe.

Accommodation

This holiday is based in the lovely Austrian village of Obertraun nestled in the majestic Dachstein mountains on the eastern shores of Hallstättersee Lake. Despite its small size, Obertraun has a number of bars and restaurants, a conveniently situated supermarket and all the amenities you might need on holiday.

The 2-Star Obertraunerhof Guesthouse is privately owned and guarantees a warm and friendly welcome. The spacious rooms are simply but comfortably furnished and offer en-suite facilities. The guesthouse is located within easy walking distance (approx 10 minutes) to the lakeside making it ideal for those cooling dips after an active day and the bar/cafe is the perfect place to relax before dinner.

Itineraries

Wednesday

Flights, Arrival, Introduction and Welcome

From Salzburg Airport we drive to our guesthouse in Obertraun and, after settling in, there will be a welcome meal and an introduction from our guide.

Thursday

Ice Cave Trek

A glorious introduction to your holiday as we travel by cable car up the “Krippenstein” to witness some spectacular views of the area before descending to explore the famous Dachstein Ice Caves. After a picnic lunch, we trek down the mountain and back to Obertraun.

Friday

Forest Adventure Day

An adrenaline filled day spent in Obertraun’s forests and mountains. The morning is spent rock climbing and bouldering. After lunch we visit a natural adventure playground with rope bridges, zip wires and via ferrata.

Saturday

Canyoning & Sea Kayaking

There are dozens of canyons in the region and we will pick one that best suits the ability of the group. We spend the morning sliding, jumping and swimming as we make our way downstream. In the afternoon, we take to the lake in sea kayaks and cross from Obertraun to Hallstatt where the reward of our endeavours is a lakeside barbecue.

Sunday

Free Day or Optional Activities

You can simply relax by the lake, explore the region or why not try optional activities such as a tandem paraglide.

Monday

Via Ferrata

Via Ferrata are protected routes through the mountains comprising iron ladders, steps and wire cables which allow adventurous walkers a safe passage into the domain of the climber. Safely clipped to the cables and using harnesses and ropes, we negotiate various routes and obstacles as you make your way through the mountains - a head for heights is a must!

Tuesday

White Water Rafting

The River Traun offers a fine combination of scenic and white water stretches allowing you to enjoy the stunning surroundings and experience the challenge of negotiating the rapids. Lunch is followed by a free afternoon.

A farewell dinner will be served tonight.

Wednesday

Depart or extend your stay

Transfer to Salzburg in good time for your homeward flights. If you wish to extend your stay we will be delighted to help you find flights which match your preferred travel dates.
