Beyond the Riviera - Family adventure Trip

1 week: UK to The Alps Maritimes (BR)

The Gorge d’Ardeche is known locally as the “Grand Canyon of Europe” and with good reason. The river winds its way through steep canyon walls and stunning scenery making this a fabulous region for canoeing, climbing and walking. We also include a high ropes course and canyoning in the neighbouring Cevennes.

Accommodation

The Hotel Clos des Bruyčres is situated just 200m from the Ardeche River and approximately 500m from the centre of Vallon Pont d’Arc where you will find a good range of restaurants, cafés, bars and shops.

Built in Provencal style, the hotel has 32 bedrooms sleeping 2, 3 or 4 people. All the rooms provide a good standard of comfort and have an en-suite bathroom and a balcony or ground floor terrace. The restaurant offers a good range of dishes with fish and seafood specialities. Meals can be served in the nautically themed restaurant or on the terrace. The hotel boasts a decent sized outdoor swimming pool....ideal for cooling off after an active day in the Ardeche and 5000sq metres of gardens.

Itineraries

Saturday

Arrival and Introduction

We recommend arriving at the hotel between 4pm and 6pm. In the evening, your guide Pat Heffron will meet you for an introductory dinner at the hotel.

Sunday

Canadian Canoeing

We spend time this morning practising in the canoes before embarking on an 8km descent. There are several exciting rapids en-route which you can choose to walk around if you prefer. We stop next to the famous arch for a picnic lunch (not included in the overall price) and swimming from the sandy beach.

Monday

Adventure Walk

A real adventure walk and hugely popular with children and adults alike. We follow the course of the river whilst exploring caves, scrambling along rocky ledges and climbing over rocks and other obstacles. The walk finishes in the early afternoon leaving plenty of time for swimming or exploring the town.

Tuesday

Free Day

The Ardeche has so many places of interest that it would be a shame not to provide time to explore the region. Alternatively, there are a host of optional activities available locally or you may just want to relax by the hotel’s pool.

Wednesday

Canyoning

Today we travel to a beautiful lake near Villefort in the Cevennes. From there, you can hire motor boats, sail and windsurf. In the afternoon we continue on to our canyon. It is here that you will swim, slide and jump into deep pools as you descend the canyon. A perennial favourite!

Thursday

AM - Rock Climbing PM - High Ropes Course

We offer two activities today. After breakfast, we head to a local rock face to try rock climbing with full instruction, equipment and supervision. In the afternoon, you can try out a “Tarzan Ropes Course” with a variety of different tasks and challenges designed to test you both physically and mentally.

Friday

Ardeche Canoe Descent

A full day 27km descent of the Gorge d’Ardeche caps a splendid activity holiday. You will pass through fabulous steep sided gorges with rock faces towering to heights of 900ft. There are numerous rapids interspersed with calmer stretches which allow you to fully appreciate the stunning scenery.
