Turkish Delight - Family adventure Trip
1 ½ weeks: Istanbul to Istanbul (IMT-FTTD)
Intro
A visit to Turkey will bring to life all those hours spent in the history classroom! On this tour we visit cities where the Romans walked and stroll through the streets of ancient Constantinople. We also have lots of time for activities with a canoeing or rafting trip down the beautiful Koprulu River, turtle spotting on the beach and the chance to cover yourself in mud at the therapeutic Dalyan mud baths! Then, to round it off there is a wonderful two day gulet cruise on our own private motor yacht with opportunities for sailing, canoeing, swimming or just relaxing.Note: An amended itinerary will operate for days 7-9 in March, April and October as the gulet is not operating.
Itinerary Change:
Day 7, Fethiye
A short drive will bring us to Fethiye, a picturesque harbour town. There are daily boat trips to islands in Fethiye Bay, which we can take if weather permits. (BD)
Fethiye
The town of Fethiye is one of the most beautiful in Southern Turkey. Spread around a large sheltered bay, with a backdrop of steep wooded mountains, there can be few more spectacular places to spend a few days. There is a harbour where you can happily spend a few hours sipping a traditional Turkish coffee whilst the yachts come and go, or perhaps you prefer to explore the many quaint plazas and lively bazaars. In the evening the streets come alive and you can sample the local seafood in a small atmospheric outdoor restaurant, try the local wine in a pavement cafe or dance the night away to live music in a sociable bar.
If you just want to relax, then the beach at Oludeniz is the place to spend your free day. Only 15km from Fethiye, and connected by frequent easy-to-use mini buses, this crescent shaped beach has miles of white sand, in an idyllic setting backed by rugged hills, and clear, turquoise water ideal for swimming. If you fancy something a bit more adventurous then you can always try your hand at parasailing or handgliding at the beach!
Elsewhere along the coast are plenty of other interesting places to explore. Kaya Village is half way between Fethiye and Oludeniz, and is a ghost town. The inhabitants were Anatolian Greeks who left the area in 1923 but whose houses remain, eerily silent and empty. There is a lovely walking trail from Kaya to Oludeniz (clearly marked by red dots) and you can cool off in the warm waters at the beach when you arrive after the two or three hour hike.
Another popular excursion is to Saklikent Gorge, where a river emerges dramatically from a narrow ravine cut deeply into the mountains. You approach the gorge along a wooden boardwalk, above the river, which opens out into a series of wooden platforms suspended above the water where you dine on trout, freshly caught in the river.
Day 8, Kaya Village
After breakfast we will be visiting the ghost village called Kaya Village where the inhabitants left the village with the exchange of the population in 1923.The village has some well-preserved churches and cathedrals. In the afternoon we will be spending time on the famous beach known as “the Dead Sea of Turkey”. (BD)
Day 9, Fethiye
Leave Fethiye after breakfast.
