Itineraries
Day 1,TOKYOArrival day.
Day 2,TOKYOA free day with an opportunity for an early morning visit to the fish markets.
Day 3,MIYAJIMAIn the morning we board the famous bullet train for the first time and travel to Hiroshima. In the afternoon we transfer to the tranquil island of Miyajima for sunset views of the 'floating' Tori Gate and a great, traditional ryokan experience.
Day 4,KURASHIKIReturning from the island we travel up the coast to Kurashiki. Literally translated as 'Storehouse town', Kurashiki's historic district is a picturesque willow-lined canal with traditional rice storage warehouses converted into museums, souvenir stores, boutiques and cafés.
Day 5,KURASHIKIA full day in Kurashiki. An optional 18km bike ride through the countryside takes us past fields and temples.
Day 6,ISHIZUCHI SANWe travel to Matsuyama from where we take the cable car to the start of our climb up this incredibly beautiful mountain along the pilgrim's route. We stay in a mountain hut for the night.
Day 7,MATSUYAMAWe take the bus back to Matsuyama where we stay overnight. A chance to relax in the famous onsen (hot spring bath).
Day 8,KYOTOFrom Matsuyama we travel by train to Kyoto.
Day 9,KYOTOA full free day to discover the Zen Gardens, huge wooden temples, pagodas and shrines of Kyoto.
Day 10,NAKASENDO WAY - MATSUMOTOWe leave Kyoto early for Nagiso and then hike one of the most beautiful sections (approx 13km) of the Shogun's trail; one of two major routes for Japanese lords on their way to the capital to pay homage. That night we arrive and stay in Matsumoto.
Day 11,MATSUMOTOA day around this town in the Japanese Alps. Amazing views, a great castle, and a fun city.
Day 12,SNOW MONKEYS - TOKYOWe leave Matsumoto and head to Kanbayashi to see the famous snow monkeys taking their bath in an onsen. We return to Tokyo.
Day 13,TOKYOTour ends.
