Intro

Travelling the highlands of Iceland in the winter, through snow and ice, all in the comfort of a superjeep, is as exciting an experience to be found anywhere in Europe. We set off into the wild interior of this jagged land, past craters, glaciers and waterfalls on an adventure that shows us the best of this fascinating country in just a week. We also explore the little-visited western side of Iceland - a journey into no mans land.

Itineraries

Day 1,REYKJAVIK

Arrival day.

Day 2,GULFOSS - GEYSIR

Take in some of the best known attractions in the south of Iceland, including the implosion crater Kerio, the great Geysir area and Gullfoss waterfall. Overnight by Geysir.

Day 3,HIGHLAND ROUTE - AKUREYRI

Traverse the interior by driving over the highland route Kjolur, taking us right between two of Europe’s largest glaciers, Langjokull and Hofsjokull, and through the geothermal area Hveravellir. Overnight in Akureyri.

Day 4,LAKE MYVATN

Start the day in Akureyri, the ‘capital of North Iceland’ before visiting the waterfall Godafoss en route to Lake Myvatn. Overnight by Lake Myvatn.

Day 5,LAKE MYVATN

Spend the day exploring the natural wonders that surround Lake Myvatn, including the lavamaze Dimmuborgir and Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall.

Day 6,REYKHOLT

Visit the Glaumbaer folk museum by Varmahlid on your way to Reykholt, the cradle of Scandinavian literature, where some of the famous Icelandic sagas were written.

Day 7,THINGVELLIR - REYKJAVIK

We visit the waterfalls Hraunfossar and Barnafoss before heading via the barren Kaldidalur mountain road, one of Iceland’s highest routes, to the ancient parliament site Thingvellir National Park. Tonight we return to Reykjavik.

Day 8,REYKJAVIK

Tour ends.
