Intro

Using Kyrenia as our base for the week, we visit charming traditional towns, historic castles, churches and monasteries; the legacy of the many different civilisations who have left their mark on this island.  The majestic mountain scenery also makes this an ideal area for hiking, and afterwards there are many traditional tavernas where you can relax whilst sampling some of the local delicacies.

Itineraries

Day 1,KYRENIA (GIRNE)

Arrival day. (No meals)

Day 2,KYRENIA AND CASTLE

Meet your tour leader and fellow travellers for an introductory briefing, followed by a tour of Kyrenia. We visit the castle, the famous Shipwreck Museum - which houses the remains of the ‘Kyrenia Ship’, a fourth Century Greek vessel, and the historic harbour area. In the afternoon there is further free time to explore the town. (BLD)

Day 3,FIVE FINGER MOUNTAIN

After breakfast we drive to the starting point of our first hike. We walk for around 20 kilometres amidst beautiful scenery, and enjoy a picnic lunch under the pine trees. (BLD)

Day 4,BUFFAVENTO CASTLE

We visit Buffavento Castle, which at 1024 metres above sea level is one of the highest points of northern Cyprus, and the Herbarium of Alevkaya, where we will have the chance to see many different types of flowers. After a barbecue lunch, we drive to the Antiphonitis Monastery, hidden in the forest, then continue along the coast to our hotel. (BLD)

Day 5,NICOSIA - ST HILARION CASTLE

Nicosia is the capital city of Cyprus, and is home to many interesting historic sites. We will explore the Dervish Pasha Mansion, originally owned by the publisher of the first Turkish newspaper in Cyprus and now preserved as a museum, and the Cathedral of St. Sophia. Later, there is free time to wander the covered bazaar area. On our way back we will visit St. Hilarion Castle, the largest in the whole of Cyprus. From the castle there are magnificent views over Kyrenia and the Mediterranean Sea. (BLD)

Day 6,KANTARA CASTLE

Visit Kantara castle, where Richard the Lionheart captured the last king of Cyprus, and then continue to Incirli cave. We explore on foot, walking around 15 kilometres before ending up in a local tavern for dinner and a drink. (BLD)

Day 7,BUYUK KONUK

We visit the small village of Buyuk Konuk to gain an insight into traditional ways of life. We see how haloumi (Cypriot cheese) and local bread are made, then sample a Turkish coffee. We may even gain an insight into the future, as local people often make predictions by reading the grains that remain in their coffee cups. There is time to walk through the village, and visit the basilica which dates from the 3rd Century. (BLD)
