Luosoto - Family Adventure - Tobogganing Trip
1 week: UK to Finland (L)
Family AdventureNestling in the fells of Central Lapland is the unspoilt village of Luosto. Located 90 minutes north of the Arctic Circle this small ski resort offers an intimate encounter with the wilderness of Lapland but from a family perspective. First class activities and accommodation in some of the cosiest cabins available are coupled with a stunning natural environment – a perfect family destination. The local ski slopes are great for beginners and will also provide good entertainment for more experienced skiers.
Accommodation
Luosto - The Village
Luosto is a very small resort surrounded by absolutely stunning Lapland countryside. We think Luosto’s size simply adds to the charm but you should not expect many local amenities. The local supermarket sells the basics, there is a well stocked souvenir shop and the possibility to purchase locally mined amethyst jewellery.
However, you certainly won’t be bored as our programmes are jam-packed and on your free day you can always take to Luosto’s ski slopes.
Accommodation - Our opinion
Plakkari Chalet
This high quality lodge is located in the heart of Luosto village and just 500m from the ski lifts. It has six private, en-suite bedrooms each equipped with a relaxing steam shower. The communal living areas are spacious and include a large lounge area with open fireplace, a fully equipped open plan kitchen, a drying cupboard, utility room and large entrance porch. After a day of winter activities you will all be able to come back to a relaxing sauna and jacuzzi, private to Plakkari. Breakfast is delivered to the lodge and evening meals are served at the Luostonhovi restaurant 100 metres away.
Itineraries
SundayFlights, Arrival and Transfers
You will be greeted at the airport before being transferred to your chalet for a welcome drink and meeting with your guide. You will discuss the week ahead before heading to the restaurant for dinner.
Reindeer Farm and Snow Games!
This morning you will travel by snowmobile to a local reindeer farm to learn about the importance of reindeer in Sami culture and drive your own reindeer-pulled sled. In the evening everyone will take part in our version of the winter Olympics – hilarious family fun!
Cross-Country Skiing and Arctic Academy
Throughout your stay you have access to cross-country skiing equipment free of charge, today you be taught how it’s done. Your afternoon is free for skiing practice or relaxation. Tonight we will journey to the Arctic Academy teepee where a leading scientist will explain the wonders of the Northern Lights - mesmerising!
Snowmobiles and Amethyst Mine
You will travel by snowmobile through the beautiful snowcapped trees before heading up onto Lampivaara Fell - the site of Europe’s only amethyst mine and some spectacular views. You will even get the chance to dig for your own gem before returning to Luosto.
In the evening you will head to the local ice rink for some pre-dinner skating.
Free Day or Optional Activities
Today is free for you to try out an additional activity such as downhill skiing on Luosto’s slopes. Relaxing in the sauna is also a very popular alternative!
Ice Fishing, Snowshoes and Pancakes
It is time to experience some truly Lappish activities. First thing, ice fishing on a local lake. Having drilled your holes in the ice you wait for the fish to bite (hopefully!). Next you take the snowy paths through the forest on a guided snowshoe trek exploring the winter landscape.
Tonight’s dessert will be served in a Lappish Kota. After a snowmobile pulled sleigh ride you are greeted by your hosts who will tell stories and cook delicious pancakes over an open fire.
Husky Safari and Farewell Evening
This is an experience you will never forget. The extraordinary sight (and sound) of the dog teams desperate to depart is almost as memorable as the silence as they pull you through the forest. A family memory to cherish forever!
This evening you go to nearby Perheluosto for the final evening involving good old fashioned sledging, a traditional Finnish smoke sauna and a delicious farewell dinner at a local restaurant.
Departure, Transfers and Flights
All good things must come to an end and after a fun-filled week it is time to head back to Kittila Airport for your return flights.
